The 21st Dragon

Today, dragons have taken on new symbolism, reflecting themes of transformation, power, and greed. No longer seen as mere mythical creatures, dragons now serve as powerful metaphors for the self.

At its core, the dragon symbolizes transformation. With their ability to shift between the realms of earth and sky, shedding their skins along the way, dragons mirror the human experience of evolving and leaving behind old versions of oneself. They represent the never-ending process of self-discovery, reminding us that growth often requires embracing change and letting go of what no longer serves us.

Dragons also symbolize strength. Their fearsome nature embodies courage, independence, and the ability to stand firm in one’s truth. In a world where people are increasingly encouraged to take control of their own narratives, the dragon serves as a reminder of the flame we each hold within. It invites individuals to tap into their inner reserves of strength, to be bold, and to pursue their path without fear.

Yet, dragons can also represent greed. The dragon's hoard, often its most prized possession, is not made up of a single gold coin but an amalgamation of many smaller pieces. In today's world, where capitalism thrives, perhaps the dragon reflects our collective obsession with accumulating wealth and material possessions. Like a creature too consumed by its shiny treasures to see what lingers outside its cave, we too can become blind to the world beyond our immediate desires.

Dragons have evolved into more than mythical beings—they represent ideas. The wings of hope, the scales of power, and the flames of greed. The dragon inked along my right forearm serves as a reminder that even in the age of electronica, magic reigns. It reminds me that within each of us exists the power to transform, the strength to endure, and the temptation of greed we must resist.
